Two Perfect Articles

Sometimes the universe aligns to help you advance your thinking or solve problems in a way you can’t anticipate. So was the case for me in the past two weeks when two very different articles were written that help me explain, in a more eloquent way than I ever could, why Trajectory is so important to me and why its mission is so critical to the education of young black students who need help funding their college education.

The first article, entitled “Privileged” is written by Kyle Korver and was published in The Players’ Tribune. Korver is a white NBA player on the Utah Jazz who put pen to paper to examine his own actions and responsibilities as it relates to the issue of race in the NBA and in our society. Perhaps the line that hit home the most for me, among many in his essay, was his view about the accountability of white men – “I think the standard that we have to hold ourselves to, in this crucial moment….. it’s higher than it’s ever been. We have to be active. We have to be actively supporting the causes of those who’ve been marginalized — precisely because they’ve been marginalized.”

The article can be found here. It’s important, I hope you’ll take a few minutes to read it.

The second article is a Wall Street Journal article entitled “The Student-Debt Crisis Hits Hardest at Historically Black Colleges” is a data driven analysis on the incredible post graduation debt load black students carry due to the rising cost of education in this country. The problem is massive, and our mission at Trajectory is to try to address this problem up-front, through scholarships for those seeking degrees from HBCU’s. It’s an admittedly small answer to a massive problem, but one I believe in from the bottom of my heart.

Here is the The Wall Street Journal article.
